Interview with Krista

Updated: Jul 22, 2024

Get ready for another interview and I am so excited. There are definitely some interesting theories in this one, theories that made me turn my head and think. But anyways, I am super excited to introduce Krista and to be working with her. It is so funny how we came together, the way I started the conversation with her, but the way she took on my ask, tried it out with me and brought it to life. This is what I love about this community. Not having to be the main character, but still having a role, being a part of what will make this event magical for guests. Without further introductions, or giving too much away, I introduce Krista, attending Calan Mai in cosplay as Alis from the Spring Court.

General Bio About You:  My name is Krista and I am a 28 yr old, Texas based cosplayer and Makeup Artist. When I am not cosplaying, I love to enjoy time with my friends either gaming or

having movie marathons. I have a 12 yr old Mini Schnauzer name Bella (Spanish

pronunciation) that the state of my mental health relies on totally.

This pup is just way too cute to not be included in the interview!!

How did you get into cosplaying? I have always loved makeup and started getting into SFX makeup in my early twenties. Halloween is my favorite holiday. When I found out there were people out there who dressed up year round and not just Halloween, it was a GAME CHANGER. I figured getting the costume to match the makeup was the natural next step. 4 years ago, I messaged my now best friend who is also an amazing cosplayer, and she took me under her wing.

You’re obviously a very experienced cosplayer, what got you to where you are today in your craft? A major self-love journey got me to where I am. I am a mid to plus size cosplayer, so

cosplaying characters I look nothing like was hard. Sometimes the internet dragged me through the coals because I dared to cosplay a canonically skinny character. I am so lucky to have friends around me who lift me up and truly believe cosplay is for everyBODY. Once I got past the mental block keeping me from cosplaying these characters I looked nothing like but loved so dearly, it’s like a whole new world opened up to me. I was given the best advice by my best friend and that is “Cosplay is YOUR fanart. Just because a character looks a certain way in that world, who has to say that they don’t look like your version in another world.” Then variants were introduced in the MCU (to me at least, I know comic book readers knew about variants way before lol) and that helped my outlook on my cosplays. Joining booktok is what really sped up this self-love journey. It’s where I found Bryce Quinlan and Lehabah and that really gave me confidence in the body that I have. Because finally there was some representation for bodies that are not stick thin.

When did you start your reading journey and with what? I was always an avid reader as a kid. I used to stay up past my bedtime reading the Harry Potter books under the covers with a flashlight and pretend to be asleep when my mom would come to check on me. Being the competitive person I am, I wanted to have the most AR points in my classes, so I could go on the best field trips. I lost that love of reading when I got to college and then no surprise here, I picked up ACOTAR and fell right back in love.

Following up, when did you first and last read the ACOTAR series? I started ACOTAR in like September of 2022 and was finished with all 5 books by November 2022. I was HOOKED. I was supposed to read the series with my best friend, but I just sped right past her because I could not put them down. Sorry, Gigi!

Ahhhh I feel this, add on several years but I also had read them in the Fall and read them FAST.

What does your character, Ali’s mean to you? Alis to me is that underrated character in the background. She took care of Feyre even if she was a little hard on her in the beginning. I think she grew to truly care about Feyre, which is evident when Mor came to save her and Alis told her to take care of her (or something like that, I still cry when I think about it).

What qualities of Alis’s do you think that you relate to best? Loyalty to those she loves and cares about. This was evident when Alis told Feyre she was going to leave for the Summer Court with her nephews. When Feyre warned her not to reveal they were friends because there was a blood ruby with her name on it, Alis’s response was regardless of the blood ruby, Feyre always had a friend in the Summer Court. That really resonated with me because I, too, am loyal to those I care about regardless of how others feel about them.

Alis is someone that we don’t know too much about, what did you think of her, what do you wish you knew more about her? I loved her. She was witty and I wish we got to see more of her. I would love to have seen how her life was in the Summer Court with her sister and her family before Amarantha came in and ruined it all. I would also love to know if she found her nephews and they are living happily in the Summer Court again. Please, Sarah, confirm!

It would be so cool if in the future Sarah explored more of the other courts, like Summer, and we got to see how her life played out or just learn more about her. I firmly believe in the side characters, I don't want their deaths (it wouldn't mean as much), but I do want them to find their happy endings. I know that we as fans aren't reading the book for Alis, we are reading it for the Archeron sisters and the bat boys, but I'd read a POV from Alis, just think about everything she witnessed for years.

What’s your “Hot Take” from ACOTAR (just book 1!)? The most unrealistic thing in the book was that Feyre fell for Tamlin when Lucien was RIGHT THERE. Mr. “If I give you the moon on a string, will you give me a kiss too?”

AHAHAHH this has me rolling over. To be fair, I would not have fallen for Lucien, as a redhead, no thank you. Tamlin all the way for me.

Wildest conspiracy theory, GO! In all of the series? Azriel and Eris are mates...I said what I said LOL I think I'm in the very small minority of people who believes in Azris.

Wait, no. This makes me uncomfy with how many people have shipped Azriel and Elain already. I don't care, I've seen this fan art and yes, it is hot, but based on their interactions, nope, not for me. Although, I think Azriel might be bad (cue monkey hiding eyes emoji!!).

In just book 1? Rhys was there when Feyre killed Andras and probably had a hand in influencing her to shoot him.

OMG yes, in so many ways I think Rhysand manipulated Feyre. Everyone who puts Rhys on the golden pedestal annoys me. I like Rhys, but I don't love him.

If you could live in any court, and the answer doesn’t have to be the Spring Court, where would it be? And why? After reading HOFAS, the Dusk Court. I fully believe that once that court basically vanished, pieces of it scattered throughout the other courts (I.e. the pool of Starlight in the Spring Court). Like there is so much to discover about it. Also, the fact both Bryce and Nesta are connected to it solidifies this answer. They are two of my soul characters and Imma stick beside them. LOL

What’s your favorite Alis quote or most impactful quote from her? Most Impactful Quote: “I saw the Morrigan arrive. Saw her reach into that cocoon of power and pick you up like a child. I begged her to take you out. I never told him that. Never told any of them. I let them think you had been abducted. But you clung to her, and she was willing to slaughter all of us for what had happened.” Alis truly believed Feyre would be better off out of the Spring Court and did what she could to help. Risked Mor’s wrath to beg her to get Feyre out.

THIS. This is why I want Alis's POV, maybe for the behind the scenes of Feyre in the Spring Court and then a little memoir of her life.

P.s. the skills in this - wow - also low key wasn't ready for this when Krista sent it to me ahahah

What do you think Alis would be wearing to Calan Mai? GIRL. I have thought about this a lot. In sticking with the vision of her as a more of a Woodland Faerie, I think she would wear a long flowy dress in earth tones and to add some flair possibly a cape/train made of vines.

Hell. Yes. I can't wait to see this!! I am so excited to see all of Krista's SFX skills and her commitment to perfecting a cosplay be channeled into her Alis cosplay.

True or False: Will Alis be on the dance floor under the stars at Calan Mai? Or will she be hiding away in the darkness? I think people are going to see a side of Alis they wouldn’t think they would ever see because she will be shredding the dance floor. However, as a caregiver, she is ever aware of those who hide away and will do her best to make them feel comfortable

and included - on or off the dance floor!

Crying, this means so much. It just shows that Krista can not only bring to life the look of Alis, but how she would interact and that means so much.

What song would immediately get you into the dance floor? Maybe White Chicks had more of an impact on me than I realize, but "Crazy in Love" by Beyonce is the best song to get me up and STRUTTING to the dance floor. The intro to it just makes you want to sassy walk up and break into a dance.

What is a song that you hear that reminds you of Alis? It’s kinda cheesy, but “Soldier, Poet, King” because I could totally picture her living her life happily in the Summer Court telling stories and singing songs to her nephews of others she met along the way.

Four words that best describe Alis: Loyal, caring, witty, strong.

Now, apply those four words to you and how you will bring her to life: I am a ride or die for those I care about.

What movie or character reminds you of Alis? (Cue Rachel thinking about this and

applying an answer later) Mrs. Potts is the only character who comes to mind when I think of Alis lol

The way that I am jealous of this answer, it is so good. And Chip, that is basically her nephews, with Belle literally being Feyre. (Yes, I know that book one is basically a Beauty and the Beast retelling and come on how did I not think that?!?) I really don't have any other ideas, that was the best and most accurate.

If you got to name the next book in the ACOTAR series what would it be and why?

A Court of Stars and Curses.

 Stars because I fully believe the next book will be a continuation of Nesta’s story

especially after how HOFAS ended. Curses because I think, while we might get more

of Nestas story, we will also get more of Koschei and how he plays a hand in the

ongoing conflicts in Prythian.

 Sorry, I know people think Elain will be next, but Nesta’s story isn’t over yet. Feyre got

multiple books to tie up her story. Maybe SJM will continue the trend with each

sister? Could be the case OR I could just be delulu. I guess we will have to see!

Wait. Oh my god. I have seen and got to read a lot of wild theories, but HOW have you been holding out on this. I love Nesta, if it was a continuation of her story I might actually like that more. This is the first time I have heard that though and I am just so impressed.

Most controversial ACOTAR opinion? Tamlin doesn’t need a redemption arc because I would say he already redeemed himself when he saved Rhys in ACOWAR. I would even go as far to say he redeemed himself when he helped Feyre escape from Hybern’s camp. What he needs now is a HEALING arc. Lots of therapy and reflection.

Also this. I have firmly believed in Tamlin needing grace gifted to him by the Night Court. I have been adamant in wanting a redemption arc, but healing this. I want to see Tamlin re-build the Spring Court. Especially if something bigger and worse is to come and all the courts are going to need to come together again. I want Tamlin to love himself, but to be loved how he deserves to be as well. I knew Krista and I would be friends lols and this just solidifies it!!

What do you think Alis would wear to a Masquerade Ball? She will be a guest, she is NOT working it! Green flowing dress, with vine accents either in the jewelry or part of the dress.

How do you think you will bring Alis to life at Calan Mai? I would love to be a roaming character throughout the event. Alis always made sure Feyre had everything she needed and was okay. I want to be that person that talks to as many people as possible around the event and make them feel included and comfortable.

Crying, this is so sweet. Also, none of my cast are ever "on show" or a platform,, everyones roles is to overall support the event by enhancing the guests experience. That will be done through all the individual interactions between a character and those around them.

What made you want to accept the role of Alis and bring her to life? I was intrigued when you first asked me. I would be lying if I said I never toyed with the idea of cosplaying Alis and putting my SFX skills to the test. An event has never had an Alis featured in their cast, so I figured what a great opportunity to represent a character I believe is a huge part of the Spring Court and the start of Feyre’s story.

Let me just say. When I came up with the idea of Calan Mai and dreamed out what this event could be, Alis was ALWAYS in those plans. Alis was more of a priority cast member for me than Nesta. She just IS the Spring Court. I think the way that Alis could be brought to life and needed to be, had to be done strategically. I can 100% say that I had fears in how the general public would view Alis, but I think she is a true representation of Spring. The way that she is described in the book, and then depicted in character art and the ACOTAR coloring book, I was immediately interested in her. I was so happy with Krista found the idea of Alis at an event to be interesting and different, exploring her character has been fun. Krista and I both separately put together vision boards of how we might see her, and funny enough we pulled several of the same inspiration pictures from Pinterest. Alis was fun, she is a character who very few have cosplayed and Krista and I both wanted to take her look in a different direction. We both leaned heavily into the "woodland fairy" inspiration, bringing in a lot of different textures and elements to build up her look. At the end of the day, I gave Krista all the control in he build, but knew we were on the same page about her.

You have not attended any of RMK’s past events, what do you think your experience will be like as a cast member? Well getting to know you a bit these past few months, you are a passionate and hardworking person. You strive to make these events unique and memorable, so I think being able to help you achieve your vision of what you want Calan Mai to be will be an amazing experience. I just appreciate you trusting me with being able to help create an unforgettable event.

Crying, this means so much. It has been my honor getting to know you and build out this Alis cosplay with you!

What do you think guests should know about attending an RMK event? Be ready for a one-of-a-kind experience!

We have obviously seen a lot of Alis content this week from you with sneak peaks and teasers, what was your experience in making content and where did your inspiration for each day of teasers come from? In talking with you about the vision we had of this version of Alis, I came up with something that may not resemble exactly what is in the book, but I think still embodies Alis. My best friend’s house is very much giving Hobbit vibes and I felt that it also resembled what the inside of the Spring Court estate would look like. I really wanted to show what her role in the Spring Court was.

I LOVED it. The content was so realistic, well done and just amazing. I don't know what I expected, but Krista freaking killed not only the content, but the editing she did as well. I felt like I was there with Alis. Funny enough, so many people originally thought it was going to be Tamlin's week, but nope, it is our favorite caregiver Alis.

As someone who is very experienced when it comes to cosplay, few have brought Alis to life, what was your vision for her? I wanted to keep the “tree bark” vibe without making my skin entirely like tree bark. We talked about how for this event we can re-envision her with more “Woodland Faerie” vibes. Adding bark detail to my skin was an homage to her canon design, but I also wanted to incorporate my own flair, so I found a crown that, to me, looked like entwining roots at the base of trees. I wanted to bring in more whimsy and nature to her look.

At that I screamed. Alis absolutely came to life. Again, while it isn't the exact same as it is in the book, it is a twist that I hope everyone loves. If Krista walked in the room in this cosplay, I would have still immediately guessed Alis. I think Krista's SFX skills are going to encourage others to step out of the "norm" and hopefully have their own little twists for characters. To be encouraged to come to Calan Mai in a "normal" cosplay or go full "fairy" with it. This event is for you, it is meant to be unique and different, to break the mold.

What developments do you plan to make to your Alis cosplay in the future? I hope to add more tree bark detailing to my skin along with incorporating more vines and general foliage you would find in the Spring Court. I played it safe with my promo content, but buckle up because at the actual events, the gloves are coming off! lol

If this is what it looked like with the "gloves on", I can't wait to see them come off!
